After establishing a solid career in speech and debate at Lamar Consolidated High School in Rosenberg, Texas, Winterfeld assumed a career in broadcast journalism at the University of Texas at Austin would be appropriate for exercising her speaking skills. After taking introductory courses in print journalism, however, she fell in love with the power of words and the art of writing.
To complement her degree in Newspaper Journalism, Winterfeld pursued opportunities through the Bridging Disciplines Program, which would allow her to take interest-specific classes, shape undergraduate research projects and create her own concentration. She also pursued linguistics by intensively studying Spanish and traveling abroad to the Dominican Republic and Spain.
Professional Experience
Winterfeld took an internship with the Fort Bend Herald and Texas Coaster daily newspaper in Rosenberg the summer after graduating from high school. As her interest in the field grew, so did her thirst for more experience. She accepted a freelance position with www.Austin360.com's brainchild, The A-List, when it was first launched by the Austin American-Statesman newspaper in Austin, Texas, at the start of 2007. Still with them today, Winterfeld attends popular entertainment events around town, interviewing, taking photos and editing them, and compiling it all onto a blog on the '360 Web site. Winterfeld also works at the Star of Texas Fair and Rodeo, testing the waters of marketing and public and media relations.
Aspirations
As the demand for multimedia resources and outlets sweep the field of journalism, Winterfeld hopes to wrap up her linguistic and professional talents into one career that would involve multimedia experience. Winterfeld has interest in working with Teach for America for lower-class elementary school programs in Texas. She also hopes to work as a multimedia journalist with the non-profit company, Makarios, in the Dominican Republic. Both careers demand experience with multimedia journalism, maintaining an understanding of the digital world and technological savvy.
