Fauzeya Rahman, born in a Chicago suburb in 1985, moved to Houston at the age of 2 and has been a Texan ever since. The youngest of three, Fauzeya is majoring in magazine journalism at the University of Texas, studying feature writing, visual design and multimedia journalism. From her writing classes, she has learned to write in a variety of styles, ranging from shorter news briefs to longer, more in-depth features. From visual design courses, she has become skilled in the use of Adobe InDesign, PageMaker and Photoshop. Currently, she is expanding into the realm of multimedia journalism.
Experience
Fauzeya has always been interested in learning more about her cultural and religious roots, as can be seen in her work experience. She recently interned at Dawn News, Pakistan’s first 24-hour English news channel, as a researcher for TalkBack, a one-on-one political talk show. During her visit to Pakistan in 2005, she interned at Pink Magazine, the first ever teen magazine of the country. She is especially proud of these experiences because they gave her a chance to gain international experience in a different setting.
Fauzeya also wrote a feature story for burnt Orange Magazine on female Muslim students at UT and the issues they face. In addition, Fauzeya has also done freelance work for austinwoman magazine and held communication internships at Applied Materials and M. D. Anderson Cancer Center.
Future Plans
Looking forward, Fauzeya plans to graduate in August 2008. She hopes to work in the field of journalism, but is open to which aspect she’ll be working in. She sees the future being one of convergence where journalists will need to be well-versed in all types of journalism to meet the demands of the times, and she hopes to be one such journalist. She is particularly interested in multimedia journalism because it gives so many more different opportunities and ways to tell a story.
Upon graduation, she plans to work abroad for some time. She would like to further her international as well as life experience outside the United States. Fauzeya’s interest in features, design and multimedia will hopefully lead to an exciting and creative future.
