Angela Akins is a senior broadcast journalism major at The University of Texas and a current member of the UT women’s golf team. She is the daughter of Marty and Pam Akins. Both of her parents are retired lawyers and her father was an All-American quarterback at UT in 1975. Angela has two older siblings, Grady and Tara. Angela was born in Houston and grew up outside of Austin.
Education
After graduating fourth in a class of 252 from Marble Falls High School in May 2004, she received an academic and athletic scholarship to Texas Christian University in Fort Worth, Texas. After two years of playing golf and attending school at TCU, Angela transferred to UT where she received another golf scholarship and has played two years for the Longhorns. Angela will graduate from UT in December 2008 and wants to become a sports broadcaster.
Her ultimate goal is to work for ESPN in their studios in Bristol, Connecticut.
Work Experience
In the summer of 2007, Angela interned at the Austin NBC affiliate, KXAN 36. The internship was in the sports broadcasting department, working with anchors, reporters, camera operators and the AVID editing system. As well as using AVID, Angela is very knowledgeable about editing with Final Cut Pro. Angela works on UT’s own broadcast news program, Texas Newswatch, doing a number of jobs including reporting, anchoring and producing.

Angela believes online and multimedia journalism is the news of the future – except it’s already here. She feels internet and web news is becoming more and more popular and many people are starting to use the computer as their number one news source.
Angela has expressed that she is taking the Fundamentals of Multimedia Journalism class because of the importance of knowing how to be a great online journalist.
Hobbies
Besides playing golf and studying, Angela enjoys traveling the world. She has been to several countries including England, France, Italy, Switzerland, The Netherlands, Egypt, Tahiti, The Cayman Islands and Mexico. Angela has studied Italian and American Sign Language and hopes to become fluent in Italian. Her family and friends are very important to her and she enjoys spending time with them.
