Stephanie Matlock

Biography

Stephanie Matlock is a print journalism senior at the University of Texas at Austin. She plans to graduate in May 2008 and hopes to work in magazine publishing. Matlock was born in Knoxville, Tenn., and moved around quite often during her childhood. Most recently, she attended high school in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, before moving back to Texas. She enjoys visiting family and friends in Rio whenever she can, as well as spending plenty of time at the beach.

Education and Career

Matlock began writing for The Daily Texan as a general reporter during the spring of 2006. Since then she has worked at the student paper as a senior reporter, senior features writer, associate features editor, associate news editor and currently works as a copy editor. She was given the Liz Carpenter Award for excellence in the promotion of diversity in the Texan by Texas Student Media in April 2007. During the summer of 2007, Matlock interned at Celebrate Publications, which publishes a local, quarterly magazine and a yearly guide to the city of Austin. There she first learned about magazine production and became interested in pursuing a career in the field. Most recently she started her second semester as an intern at Texas Monthly magazine in the custom publishing department. This opportunity has allowed her to get a better understanding of the magazine industry, as well as sparked an interest in the expansion of many print publications to online content because of the availability of information to such a wide audience. Though she plans to work in print, Matlock hopes to use the advancement of online journalism to add new dimensions to each story. She is interested in video and audio editing and hopes to be able to apply those skills to her job someday.

Future

Besides writing and editing, Matlock enjoys cooking, the Food Network, reading for pleasure, home decor, fashion magazines and organizing. Her favorite TV shows are "The Sopranos" and "The Office."
